SA302

UK tax glossary · Last reviewed: April 2026

An SA302 is the tax calculation document produced after a Self Assessment return is processed. It shows total income, tax deducted, and the final tax due or refunded. Mortgage lenders typically request two or three years of SA302s as proof of self-employed income.

You can download SA302 documents from your HMRC online account immediately after filing. Paper SA302s can take four to six weeks to arrive by post. Most lenders now accept the online version printed directly.

SA302s are accompanied by a 'Tax Year Overview' which confirms the amount has been paid. Lenders usually want both documents. The tax year overview is also available from your HMRC online account.

Common questions

How do I get an SA302 from HMRC?

Log into your Government Gateway account, go to 'Self Assessment', then 'View your calculation' for the relevant year. You can print or save the SA302 from there instantly.

What if my income looks lower than expected on the SA302?

SA302 shows net profit after allowable expenses. If you claim significant business costs, your SA302 income may look low to a mortgage lender. Some lenders will add back certain deductions — ask a specialist mortgage broker.
